This is the only Obi of this dramatic nature that I have found in Japan in over 23 years. With its pure gold threads juxtaposed against the dramatic black of the pine, it makes an astounding artwork.

DESCRIPTION:  This is a rare, hand woven Silk “Maru Obi,” which is the most formal and most expensive of the Japanese Obi. A Maru Obi has but one seam, and has been woven in a continuous repeat pattern and folded over to create 2 visions of the same spectacular scene. The Silk threads in this Obi have a marvelous sheen that is particularly noticeable in the light beige background. Also, in the background, are pure gold threads that have been woven in as swirling clouds. The bold Black Pine ("Matsu")  present an intriguing silhouette against the rocky promontory. They  stand out dramatically against the gold and beige background.

The prominent design of the Pine has been rendered in the style of Kano Eitoku (1543-1590) who excelled in bold designs which had a very modern look during the Momoyama Era. The Pine symbolizes longevity in the Japanese culture, which would have been significant for the young woman who would have worn this powerful Obi. Married, older women would never have worn such a dominant pattern in their Obi as it attracts attention. In addition, this vibrant and stunning Obi  has two rows,  not the more common single row,  of gold stripes near the bottom hem, which denote that a woman of high rank and wealth in Japanese society wore this dramatic Obi. The intricacy of the design and the inclusion of pure gold threads in the pattern attest to the artistry of the weaver.
