The stunning dark lapis of the background of this intricately hand woven design make it an unusual and uncommon artwork.
The Crane stand out against the dark blue and green background of the stylized versions of the Bamboo ("Take") and the Pine ("Matsu"). The Pine represent longevity, while the Bamboo symbolizes strength and flexibility. The other element of the design that is noticeable against the profusion of Pine and Bamboo are the Chrysanthemum, the flower of the Imperial Household. The intricacy of the design, the inclusion of pure gold threads in the pattern, and the striking colors attest to the artistry of the weaver, while the lustrous pure gold stripes at the bottom of the pattern denote that a woman of high rank and wealth in Japanese society wore this dramatic Obi.
