DESCRIPTION: This is a portion of an exquisite “Maru” Obi, the most formal of the Obi, that has been hand woven of the finest pure Silk and Gold threads. It is a traditional example of the most elaborate of the Maru Obi to be handwoven for Japanese women before the turn of the century. It is, however, the tremendous amount of pure gold thread woven into the design that makes it absolutely unique. The gold is not only part of the intricacy of the pattern; it also creates an overall sheen to this Runner that is unparalleled. Only a member of the nobility, someone with great wealth, could have commissioned the weaving of such a rich Obi. The traditional colors are from natural sources, while the design incorporates many of the time-honored symbols: the Chrysanthemum ("Kiku"), the flower of the Imperial Family; the Pine ("Matsu") representing longevity; Bamboo ("Take") for good fortune; and typical geometric patterns. The portion preserved here has been backed in Moiré Silk, while each end has been enclosed in a rich, decorative, gold trim with matching tassels that have been imported from Germany.
